🐭🐸🐹Expressing Decimals as Factions 🐭🐸🐹

Welcome 👦👧boys and girls to another Mathematics Class. Today, we will be going on an adventure where we will be learning how to express decimals as fractions.

How to convert/change decimals to Fraction?

Definition

A decimal is a way of writing a number that is not whole, using a decimal point to separate the whole part from the fractional part. A fraction represents a part of a whole, written as a ratio of two numbers (numerator over denominator).

To express a decimal as a fraction, you follow these steps:

1.     Write the decimal as a fraction: The digits after the decimal point become the numerator (the top number).

2.     Determine the denominator: The denominator (the bottom number) is a power of 10 (10, 100, 1000, etc.), based on the number of decimal places.

o    1 decimal place → denominator is 10 (tenths)

o    2 decimal places → denominator is 100 (hundredths)

o    3 decimal places → denominator is 1000 (thousandths)

Example 1: Converting a Decimal with One Decimal Place
Convert 0.7 to a fraction.

  • Step 1 & 2: 0.7 has one decimal place, so the fraction is 7/10 (seven-tenths).

Example 2: Converting a Decimal with Two Decimal Places
Convert 0.35 to a fraction.

  • Step 1 & 2: 0.35 has two decimal places, so the fraction is 35/100 (thirty-five hundredths).

  • Example 3: Converting a Decimal with Three Decimal Places

Convert 0.125 to a fraction.

  • Step 1 & 2: 0.125 has three decimal places, so the fraction is 125/1000.

Example 4: Converting a Decimal Greater than 1
Convert 2.6 to a fraction.

  • Step 1 & 2: 2.6 has one decimal place and a whole number part. Write it as a mixed number: 2 6/10 (two and six-tenths).

  • Answer: 2 3/5 (This can also be written as an improper fraction: 13/5)
