A digit's value in a decimal number depends on its position. For example, each digit, moving from right to left, is 10 times greater than the previous digit:

  • 1,000 is 10 times greater than 100.
  • 100 is 10 times greater than 10.
  • 10 is 10 times greater than 1.
  • 1 is 10 times greater than 0.1.
  • 1 is 10 times greater than 0.01.
  • 01 is 10 times greater than 0.001.
