🌭🍟🍔Writing Decimals in the Worded Form🌭🍟🍔

Welcome, 👦👧boys and girls, to another fun Math class! Today, we’re going to explore how to write decimals in worded form.

🐷What are decimals?

Decimals are numbers that have parts that are not whole. Our decimal system splits whole numbers into tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on.

If we have a number which has tenths, hundredths etc. we can place digits corresponding to those place values after a decimal point.

How do we write decimals in the worded form? Let us examine the screen below👇

Here are some examples to show you how it's done.

Decimal Number

Worded Form

How to Read It

0.3

three tenths

Say the number (3) and its place value (tenths).

0.45

forty-five hundredths

Say the number (45) and its place value (hundredths).

1.2

one and two tenths

Say the whole number (1), "and" for the point, then the decimal part (2 tenths).

3.07

three and seven hundredths

The zero in the tenths place doesn't change the word form. We say "hundredths" because 7 is in the hundredths place.

12.34

twelve and thirty-four hundredths

Whole number (12), "and", then decimal number (34) and its place value (hundredths).

5.006

five and six thousandths

The zeros show that the 6 is in the thousandths place.

0.80

eighty hundredths

This is read as hundredths. We do not say "and" because there is no whole number part.
